NAME: Gaara
AGE: 16
GENDER: Male
RANK: Kazekage
VILLAGE: Sunagakure
APPEARANCE: Standing at an average height, a little short for his age, Gaara has pale skin and short, spiked red hair, with bangs that part to reveal a scar on his forehead in the shape of the kanji "ai". His eyes are a pale green and framed with thick black rings, the result of a severe lack of sleep since his birth. He is most often found wearing a long, deep red coat with a high collar, with black pants that are tied at the tops and bottoms of the legs by straps beneath, and black sandals. A large, corked gourd filled with sand is strapped to his back by a one-shouldered blue vest, and belts of the same color rest at his hips, adorned with several large pouches.
PERSONALITY: With a maturity and clarity beyond his age, Gaara is able to see the truth of a situation, even when others cannot. Because of his own troubled past, he has great empathy for others, and tries to guide them to make the right decisions, regardless of whether or not those are the ones they want.
WEAPONS: Sand
CHAKRA ELEMENT: Wind
JUTSU: Daisan no Me: Using an eye made from his sand, Gaara is able to see anything it can see, and can move it about as he wishes. This is required for his sight when he is within his Suna no Mayu, and is also useful for information gathering.
Rendan Suna Shigure: Gaara brings sand in front of himself, forming small clumps within it, and then shoots them toward his opponent like bullets.
Ryuusa Bakuryuu: Gaara creates an immense amount of sand by crushing rocks, both large and small, in the ground. This fills a very large area with sand, and works similarly to a large-scale version of Sabaku Kyuu, setting up Sabaku Taisou.
Sabaku Fuyuu: Gaara forms his sand into small platforms, strong enough to stand on, which can levitate over any dangers from below.
Sabaku Kyuu: Gaara fully imprisons his opponent in sand, completely restricting their movement and setting them up for Sabaku Sousou.
Sabaku Rou: Gaara traps his opponent in a sphere of sand, much larger than the amount used in Sabaku Kyuu.
Sabaku Sousou: Once his opponent is trapped by Sabaku Kyuu, Gaara contracts the sand around them, crushing them.
Sabaku Taisou: After making a large volume of sand over an area with Ryuusa Bakuryuu, Gaara contracts all of it, making it a large-scale version of Sabaku Sousou.
Suna Bunshin no Jutsu: Gaara can create a clone of himself from his sand. Attacks used on this clone can sink into the sand, which can then trap the limbs/weapons of the attacker.
Suna no Mayu: Fully surrounding himself with a sphere of sand, Gaara cannot be harmed. This jutsu requires Gaara to use Daisan no Me to see.
Suna no Tate: Gaara's sand forms a shield to automatically defend him from attacks, even ones he is unaware of, acting with incredible speed.
Suna no Yoroi: Gaara can cover his body with a thin layer of sand, preventing him from being injured even if his Suna no Tate fails to react quickly enough.
Suna Shigure: Gaara raises small pieces of sand into the air and rains it onto his opponent. This works as a distraction, allowing him to trap his opponent with more sand, and then set up Sabaku Kyuu with what is still falling.
Suna Shuriken: As the name implies, Gaara makes his sand form shuriken, which he then sends at his opponent. The strength of the sand shuriken is far superior to normal shuriken.
HISTORY: Before Gaara's birth, the bijuu Shukaku was sealed within him. His mother, hating the fact that she would die because of it, gave him his name as a curse: "a demon who loves only himself". His abilities as a jinchuuriki gave him his defensive sand, and unable to control it, he would sometimes injure or kill people unintentionally. As a young child, he was shunned by his village, with adults and children alike terrified of his power. Desperately longing for companionship, he clung to the affection of Yashamaru, his mother's brother. However, it was decided that he was too dangerous to live, and an assassin was sent after him, intending to kill the boy while he was unaware. His sand prevented the attack from working, and he retaliated in anger, discovering, to his despair, that the assassin was Yashamaru. He told Gaara of his mother's true feelings toward him and that his father had ordered the attack, shattering the lies that he had told him about her love for him and proving that he had no one who truly cared for him. Yashamaru died in a final, failed attempt to kill Gaara, who, driven mad by the betrayals, decided to make his name true, carving the "ai" kanji into his forehead with his sand.
He then began to murder anyone who offended him or threatened him in the slightest, thinking that the blood of those he killed would strengthen his sand. His entire village became even more terrified of him, and even his siblings were forced to keep their distance if they wanted to keep their lives. Eventually, after becoming a genin, he entered into the chuunin exams held in Konohagakure, where he acted on orders to aid in making Orochimaru's planned destruction of the village easier. The plan failed, and though he advanced far through the exam, with his team beating the previous record for the second section of it by over four hours, he and his siblings were forced to retreat. While attempting to escape, they were confronted by Konoha ninja Uchiha Sasuke, and then by the rest of his team. Gaara fought fellow jinchuuriki Uzumaki Naruto, a boy with a past similar to his own, and at the conclusion of the battle, realized that his approach to his life as a jinchuuriki had been wrong.
This marked a major change in Gaara. He began to trust and open up to his siblings little by little, and then to the others of his village. Abandoning his murderous past, he grew into a strong, respected, and well-liked shinobi, eventually taking the title of Kazekage that had been left vacant with his father's death prior to the attack on Konoha. However, as a jinchuuriki he became the target of Akatsuki, and came under attack by Deidara, one of its members. Though Gaara proved stronger than him, the explosives expert threatened Sunagakure, and Gaara exhausted his chakra to protect his village. Captured, he was taken for a ritual to extract Shukaku from him, and despite efforts to retrieve him, the ritual succeeded, ending in his death.
Feeling guilt over sealing Shukaku within him years earlier, an elder kunoichi of Sunagakure, Chiyo, gave her life to return his. Met by an outpouring of shinobi from his own village as well as several from Konoha, Gaara realized that he had finally made a complete reversal of his former self, and returned to Suna to open arms.
When the summit of kage was called, Gaara joined them, but was quickly dismissed for his young age. Before much could be said, they were attacked by Uchiha Sasuke, and Gaara and his siblings went to their defense, fighting him off despite the fact that he had once been an ally. Sasuke was retrieved by Uchiha Madara, who then told the kage of his plan to trap the entire world within his genjutsu, and Gaara met his words with defiance, immediately after taking on a leadership role and proposing an alliance of the kage's villages. His suggestions were quickly accepted, and a plan to combat Madara was formed.
Now, Gaara works to strengthen that alliance, willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of the remaining jinchuuriki and stop Madara's plan from succeeding.
